Introduction to Year 9 Options 2021

Dear Parents/Carers,

The time has come for you and your child to make some very important decisions. What we present on these pages is a preview of courses we have on offer in Key Stage 4, Y10 – Y11. So far, the education which our students have been receiving in Key Stage 3 (Y7 – Y9) has been based on a broad curriculum covering all main areas of knowledge and skills. From September, students will follow courses in more depth and, consequently, must now choose those subjects they will continue to study and those they will not.

Government policy promotes that all students study a Humanity (History or Geography) or a Modern Language (Spanish or French). Therefore, in line with this we have structured their options to meet these requirements. Although we appreciate that this limits the choice available to students, we feel it necessary to make them on a level playing field with students of similar ability when they leave Rye Hills and move onto further and higher education. The English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) is available to all students who have studied a Modern Foreign Language during Key Stage 3. If your child would like to follow this route they just need to ensure that they choose either French or Spanish (whichever one they are currently studying) and either History or Geography.

If your child’s current teachers feel that your child should definitely studying both a humanity and a language the letter they received will suggest the Ebacc pathway.

If your child does not wish to follow the Ebacc pathway, they just need to choose three subjects, including either one language (French or Spanish) or one humanity (History or Geography).

Options choices are crucially important and need to be made in an informed and thoughtful manner. I therefore urge all students and parents to read carefully the information and advice that is contained in the Options area of the website and ask any questions you may have during the virtual Year 9 Options Evening on Thursday 15th April between 5 – 7pm.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact Miss Jones or Mr Waugh.

There are some very important decisions to be made. I hope this information helps.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs C. Waugh

Head of School
