Student Librarian Training Scheme

Trainee Level Course

At Rye Hills we offer students in years 7, 8, 9 and 10 the opportunity to take part in the Student Librarian Training Scheme, organised by the School Library Service, which offers a support service to schools in the four Teesside boroughs. Currently up to 30 schools from across Teesside take part in the Award Scheme and the number is growing each year.

Pupils volunteer and commit their own time for up to 1 academic year. The pupils carry out a range of duties in the library during registration, break time, lunch time and occasionally after school. The duties include: issuing and returning books, cataloguing, processing and repairing stock, supervision of pupils using the library and it's facilities and the upkeep of the book shelves.

In order to gain the award students are expected to learn a variety of practical skills and complete 6 worksheets relating to their work in the library and to the Dewey Decimal System. They are also required to design a user guide, draw a plan of the library and write 5 book reviews. In the second half of the course they must also devise a small practical project as part of a group which will be displayed.

When the pupils have completed all of the written and practical coursework as well as their daily duties they will be invited to an Award Ceremony which is held at one of the participating schools. Each pupil will be presented with a certificate by a guest speaker; usually an author, poet or illustrator, which in past years have included: Alan Gibbons, Gervase Phinn, Paul Cookson, Aidan Chambers, The ‘2 Steve’s’, Andy Briggs and Craig Bradley. Pupils display their practical project work and have the opportunity to have books signed by the guest speaker. Pupils can invite 1 parent/ carer to the Award Ceremony.

The Student Librarian Training Scheme is a great opportunity for pupils in different year groups to work together as part of a team and make lots of new friends. The scheme helps to build the pupils confidence by giving them a wide range of responsibilities in the library. The Student Librarian Training Scheme certificate is a well recognised accreditation and a beneficial addition to a curriculum vitae.

Advanced Level Course

For those students wishing to gain a further qualification and who feel they would like to gain a more in-depth knowledge of the workings of a school library we also run an Advanced Level Course.  Pupils wishing to work towards the Advanced Level Course must have first passed the Trainee Level Course. The Advanced Level Course consists of 6 modules combining both written and practical work. Each student is required to complete modules 1-5 unless they select module 6, in which case they need to complete 3 other modules of their choice, making a total of 4 modules.

Module 6 is a Creative module and pupils must spend 2 terms working on their chosen project. Past projects have included: a Library quiz and fundraising event, designing and publishing a Library newsletter over the course of year and producing a diary of a year in the life of an Advanced Student Librarian etc...

The Advanced Level pupils work closely with the Trainee Level pupils sharing their expertise and offering assistance when needed.
