KS4 Pupils should produce a CV which they can continue to update throughout their working life.

What is a CV?

Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a Latin phrase that means the course of (your) life.

A CV should be an easy to read summary of your qualifications, skills, experience and achievements. 

Why do you need a CV?

Writing your CV gives you an opportunity to showcase your skills, most employers will request a copy of your CV when you apply for a job. You can send a copy of your CV with a cover letter to demonstrate your interest to the following: 

  • Applying for Work Experience.

  • Applying for voluntary work

  • Applying for a part-time job such as on weekends and holidays.

  • Applying for an apprenticeship.

What should you include in a CV?

  • Contact Details (name, contact address/email address) 

  • A brief personal profile at the beginning which describes you and your personal skills and qualities. 

  • A section that outlines your education and qualifications

  • A section that details any employment or work experience you have had. 

  • A section that describes your skills and achievements. 

  • Any further interests 

  • References (x2)

Top Tips

  • Be positive - This is your chance to shine. 

  • Be honest - Make sure that you can evidence everything your write, remember they could ask you about it at an interview.

  • Be professional - Make sure your email address is appropriate. 

  • Be current - Make sure you update your CV as you gain experience and develop your skills. Don’t forget to check your contact details are up to date.

  • Be presentable - Create in a Word document, check your spelling and grammar. Use a suitable font (size 10,11 or 12). Use a plastic wallet or an envelope to keep the document pristine.

  • Keep it brief (a maximum of two sides of A4) 

  • Have someone check it through with you - show your teacher, careers officer or a parent/carer.

CV Writing Sessions

Year 10

All of Y10 will attend a workshop at the Making Opportunities Day which is on Friday 23rd February 2018. This event is held at Redcar and Cleveland College.

Year 11

Foundation for Jobs will be in school to run CV writing workshops with you on the following dates during registration:

  • Wednesday 10th January 2018 -  NFRo (231) and NKBA (226)
  • Wednesday 17th January 2018 - SACH (119) and SRMC (105)
  • Wednesday 24th January 2018 - BJAn (IT2) and BPSM (IT1)
