KS4 Science begins in Y9 where students begin their AQA science education.  They will study a wide and rich content including looking at how the world around us works, animal and plant structure and functions and forces and energy on and off earth.

Year 10

In year 10 students continue their AQA course to be examined at the end of year 11.  Triple scientist will be looking to begin their additional studies all providing a fascinating in depth look into biology, chemistry and physics in the 21st century.

Year 11

Students conclude their AQA journey and prepare for exams reflecting on a varied and comprehensive science curriculum having gained a in depth knowledge of science around us.

Long Term Plans

Below are the long term plans for KS4 including Year 9:

GCSE Science Long Term Plans for KS4

Course Information

GCSE Trilogy Science

What is the course about?

GCSE Trilogy Science gives students a good basic knowledge of Science by covering all three disciplines over the two-year course. It is suitable for students of all abilities and the course encourages students to understand theoretical concepts alongside developing practical Science skills.

Completion of the entire content of the course can form the Science component of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) if students achieve 5 - 9 grades in both GCSEs.

The exams test knowledge and understanding as well as application of science skills, resulting in a student who is well rounded in Science in the 21st Century.

What qualification will I gain?

Two GCSEs. The higher paper students can gain grades from 4-9 and the foundation paper 1-5 grades.

How will I be assessed?

6 exams in total. 2 form each of the disciplines covering content and practical skills.  (1hr 15 mins per exam)

What will the lessons be like?

The lessons will vary between traditional learning of facts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics to discussions, debate and practical experiments.  Current scientific affairs are also discussed which is helpful for progression post-16 in any subject and interview.

What will this course prepare me for?

This course will allow students to take science further at A-Level or other vocational routes.  It allows students to either continue their study of science into further education or apply what has been gained to other avenues. It really allows you to do whatever you want with science!! From pharmaceuticals, medicines and nursing to engineering, energy companies and many other careers.

GCSE Separate Science:

Biology, Chemistry and Physics

What is the course about?

The separate sciences follow a set of question based exams which will test your knowledge and understanding as well as your application skills.  Required practical elements are conducted throughout the year and will also form part of the assessment in the exams.  Each of the three disciplines are covered at a high level of detail.  A wide range of topics and skills are investigated in order to build upon KS3 knowledge and prepare learners for a future in science.

What qualification will I gain?

Three individual GCSEs: one in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  These qualifications are usually taken at the Higher Tier of entry.

How will I be assessed?

The curriculum will be assessed by examination only.

Students will sit 6 exams. 2 in each of the disciplines at the end of year 11 (1:45 mins per paper)

What will the lessons be like?

The lessons will vary between studious concentration on current scientific developments to testing current hypotheses via practical investigations and experiments.  The lessons will be just like the Trilogy Science but with the extra content. These units have current affairs in terms of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  There is also a greater demand on independent learning to meet the expectations of the course.

What will this course prepare me for?

This course prepares you for 3 separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  With grades from 6-9 you will be in an ideal position to take on the challenges of ‘A’ levels in all of the three sciences.  This course does make you more competitive for the more advanced post-16 courses and careers such as Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences.
