GCSE Food and Nutrition

D&T - GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

What is the course about?

The new GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is an exciting and creative course which focuses on practical cooking skills to ensure students develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials.  At its heart, this qualification focuses on nurturing students' practical cookery skills to give them a strong understanding of nutrition.

What qualification will I gain?

You will gain one GCSE qualification. The course is suitable for candidates of all abilities and, though no prior experience is needed, builds on the work you have done in KS3 Food lessons.

How will I be assessed?

Non-Exam Assessment (NEA)

Task 1: Food investigation

Students' understanding of the working characteristics, functional and chemical properties of ingredients.

Task 2: Food preparation assessment

Students' knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, cooking, presentation of food and application of nutrition related to the chosen task.

Students will prepare, cook and present a final menu of three dishes.

Theoretical knowledge of food preparation and nutrition from:

·        1.Food, nutrition and health

·        2.Food science

·        3.Food safety

·        4.Food choice

·        5.Food provenance

What will the lessons be like?

Some of the lessons will be practical where you will be working with food/ingredients to create a range of dishes. Other lessons will be theory and this is where you will gain the knowledge and understanding that underpins the food preparation process. These sessions will be crucial to prepare you for your written ‘research report’ and final exam. The practical lessons will take place in either a food room or our commercial kitchen and the theory lessons will be in the classroom/ICT suite.
